Cotinine

What is cotinine?Cotinine [COAT-e-neen] is one of the things that the body makes from nicotine, which is found in cigarettes, cigars, chew, and snuff. When a person smokes, nicotine enters the body and cotinine is produced. Where is cotinine present?Cotinine is found in blood, urine, spit (saliva), or sometimes hair. In this study, we will measure cotinine in your spit sample because it is easy to collect. Why do we measure cotinine? We measure cotinine to see how much nicotine has entered a persons body. Even though we ask you if you have been smoking, it is important for us to have a quantitative measure of nicotine exposure. We can also tell whether or not someone has been exposed to secondhand smoke by measuring cotinine. When do we measure cotinine? We measure cotinine when you first start our program, then again at the end of the 12-week program, at your 6-month group session, and 1 year after you quit. What do we do with the sample after we collect it?We take your sample to a lab at KUMC, where they determine the amount of cotinine in it. After we have the results, we respectfully destroy the sample. We do not use the sample for anything else and do not allow anyone else access to it.Let your facilitator know if you would like to know your cotinine results!
